Food Safety Guidelines Endorsed by WHO and FAO

Safe Food International would like to announce that the Safe Food International Guidelines for Consumer Organizations to Promote National Food Safety Systems are available in English, Spanish, and French. These Guidelines were the culmination of two years of work by more than 30 consumer organizations worldwide, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The documents carry the logos of WHO and FAO, as they have been endorsed by both organizations. Consumers International and the International Association of Consumer Food Organizations — both international umbrella organizations composed of consumer organizations — also provide important assistance in the development of the Guidelines. The Guidelines are to provide standards and a mechanism to evaluate national programs for consumer organizations to use with national governments and food-related committees considering food safety improvements.
CSPI formally released the Safe Food International Guidelines at a National Academy of Sciences meeting in Washington, D.C. on October 26, 2005. Jorgen Schlundt, director of food safety at WHO, was also present at the meeting. The Guidelines were published the U.S. publication Food And Drug Law Journal in September 2005 and have been presented to the World Bank and other international institutions.
Future Activities: Funding for regional training conferences and capacity building may be available to interested groups in developing countries through the Standards and Trade Development Fund (STDF) — a joint project of the WHO, FAO, World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
